(FOOTBALLERS WIFE DIES AFTER OPP) Denise Hendry, the spouse of former Scotland captain Colin Hendry, had been in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital for the last 12 weeks.
The 43-year-old contracted a serious infection following an operation to correct a disastrous liposuction procedure done seven years ago.
Hendry, 43, the ex-Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers and Rangers central defender, has been at her bedside throughout the ordeal.
"Words cannot describe the desolation we feel," he said.
"Denise was the shining light in our lives and today that light has gone out.
"She had battled bravely after her liposuction procedure had gone appallingly wrong.
"Further corrective surgery in Preston Infirmary had not been successful and we were hopeful the operation she went in to Salford Royal for would be a success.
"Tragically she caught an infection which despite further surgery she has succumbed to
"I cannot begin to imagine life without her, but we are a strong and devoted family and somehow, if only for Denise's sake, we will get through."
His wife almost died seven years ago and suffered multiple complications after the cosmetic procedure at a private hospital went badly wrong.
The Hendrys, who had been together for more than 20 years, have four children - Rheagan, Kyle, Calum and Niamh, aged between 19 and nine.
Denise had wanted to regain her figure after the birth of her youngest child but fell ill just two days after cosmetic surgery and required treatment for septicaemia at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Her heart also stopped for four minutes as she suffered a cardiac arrest following the botched operation.
She suffered nine punctures to her bowel and colon, causing blood poisoning and multiple organ failure, and needed a 16-hour operation in May as part of the long recovery process.
However, it is understood she suffered a meningitis-type infection as a result of the latest operation and was in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital
Specialist, Professor Gordon Carlson, was treating her in the unit of the National Intestinal Failure Centre based at the hospital.
Swedish cosmetic surgeon Gustav Aniansson carried out the liposuction at the private Broughton Park Hospital in Preston, Lancashire, in April 2002.
Lawyers later secured a six-figure damages settlement in November 2006, while Dr Aniansson voluntarily applied to be removed from the General Medical Council's register.
Hendry said in May: "It's easy to look back now and say how we wish she hadn't gone to Aniansson, but she did and we're having to live with the awful consequences of that man's negligence."
Further corrective surgery at Preston Royal Infirmary was not successful and his wife had to have treatment at Salford Royal

How will heaven be?
As far as I can see
It will have huge bells
And will be situated on clouds
It will have many golden wells
That will so often swell
Rain will be abundant
And the sun will shine all day long
Angels will play on the harp
The sweetest summer song
Music that will touch the heart
While those beneath will shed drops of sorrow
Little will they know what will happen on the morrow
But to them up above
As plain and clear it will be
As far as far as I can see
Yes there will be misty alleys
And lush green meadows
Fresh with the fragrant smell of spring
Winter will never be bitter
Summer never so hot
Autumn never so bare
And resources never so scarce
Food for all will be relished by all.
Grateful we’ll be as grateful can be
Mountains high and strong and brown
Surrounding that hidden land,
Beautiful and vast seas I see
There colour as blue as sapphire can be
And the white waves lashing upon the shore
Sitting on the flattened grey rocks
Who would not call it absolutely heavenly?
However it might actually be,
But can we still not see
There will lie behind this seen
A relieving feeling of bliss
For where not have we been
But is this not by all believed
That after one’s decease
This is the land of eternal peace
Where we all ultimately reach?

THAT ONLY YOU COULD HEAR
NO ONE HEARD THE FOOTSTEPS
OF A ANGEL DRAWING NEAR
SOFTLY FROM THE SHADOWS
THERE CAME A GENTLE CALL
YOU CLOSED YOUR EYES AND WENT TO SLEEP
AND QUITLY LEFT US ALL
ALWAYS THINKING OF YOU

Dear Colin and Family, i am so sorry to hear that Denise has passed away, she was one of the nicest down to earth people you could ever meet. Colin my thoughts are with you. Jane x ( you where best man at our weddign many years ago)
I am so sorry to hear of your death. You were ill in 2002 at the same time as my wee boy and you were both fighting for your lives then. I remember being delighted that you survived & it gave me hope for my son. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for him but I hope now you are up there with him looking after him like one of your own children. My heart goes out to your family & they are all in my prayers. God bless Denise, rest in peace, love Ross's Mum xxx
